LightSand® introduces new line of SMB SAN Gateways – Makes distant SAN/NAS connectivity for Business Continuity applications truly affordablePLANO, TX, March 14, 2006. LightSand® Communications, Inc., a company pioneering SAN Connectivity solutions, announced today that it is launching a new line of SMB gateways, which will make remote SAN connectivity affordable for a much wider number of companies seeking to implement business continuity and disaster recovery solutions over distance. These new gateways support the interconnection of Fibre Channel storage as well as Network Attached Storage over any IP WAN infrastructure, from campus proximity to distances up to thousands of kilometers. « Our new line of products is the answer to a clear demand from the market, for cost-effective SAN connectivity gateways with a high level of features and performance, for applications to Remote Disk-To-Disk Backup solutions, said LightSand CEO, Richard Czech. Many small and medium companies are now looking at replacing their local tape-based backup solutions, with remote managed solutions which provide higher performance levels and increased reliability. We have designed our new SMB SAN gateways to support any carrier low cost IP WANs, while keeping customer SANs totally isolated from any WAN disruption. The product is available now for end-users to implement truly affordable interconnectivity solutions for remote storage.» The new SMB line will feature three products: the LightSand i-8100B SMB, the LightSand i-8100A SMB, and the LightSand i-8100E SMB. All products include two Fibre Channel and one Layer 2 Ethernet interfaces for local network connections, and one IP wide area extension interface. The IP WAN port includes compression and configurable bandwidths from DSL speed up to 1GbE speed, maintaining maximal possible performance even in shared or low bandwidth IP WAN environments. The LightSand i-8100B SMB provides transparent bridging for geographically dispersed SANs over IP networks, for applications that include data replication and migration, disaster recovery, remote access, business continuity and asset management. The i-8100B SMB with its unique trunking mechanism allows connection of two concurrently operating SAN fabrics and of one layer 2 over a single wide area connection. The i-8100B SMB supports SAN extension for campus, metro, regional, or national distances. The LightSand i-8100A SMB, a sophisticated 4-port switching gateway, features local data switching, SAN-to-SAN isolation (routing between FC fabrics) and one IP extension tunnel for connecting remote sites in onto a single device. The i-8100A SMB brings scalability, isolation, and wide area connectivity to FC networks. When two SANs are merged using a traditional connection over the WAN, the two FC fabrics will become one. This approach, which might be adequate in a small local environment, can lead to scalability and management problems when multiple remote sites and a greater number of FC switches participate in the fabric. The LightSand i-8100A SMB allows multiple SAN fabrics to be interconnected without merging the fabrics. Storage devices can be securely shared between sites, while the SAN fabrics operate independently. The i-8100A SMB ability to interconnect multiple SANs of FC switches from different vendors makes this gateway indispensable for a flexible data center solution. The LightSand i-8100E SMB provides the same features as the i-8100B SMB, with switching capabilities which allow direct connections of FC devices to the LightSand gateway.
